If you’re visiting for the art though, be sure to check out a few of the many masterpieces that have come from Tuscany’s countless brilliant artists.

Michelangelo’s David

There’s a good chance that you know of 5.17 meter marble statue of David, but did you know that it was made in the city of Florence? Sculpted by Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (better known as Michelangelo), this masterpiece represents the Biblical hero David and, because of the nature of the hero, it also came to symbolise the defence of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence.

Today, it stands in the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze – or in English, the Gallery of the Academy of Florence.

Gates of Paradise

Lorenzo Ghiberti (born Lorenzo di Bartolo) was an artist of the Early Renaissance from Florentine – and he’s most well known for being the creator of the bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery. Michelangelo himself named these works of art the Gates of Paradise, and they’re truly a masterpiece that show his talents as a goldsmith and sculptor.

Madonna del Parto

Madonna of Parturition (more commonly known by its Italian name, Madonna del Parto), is an iconic depiction of a pregnant Virgin Mary – and there have been a number of works of art depicting this. Examples of some of the most famous ones include those by Taddeo Gaddi, Bernardo Daddi and Nardo di Cione. Although one of the most well known ones is the fresco made by Piero della Francesca.

The latter can be found at the Musei Civici Madonna del Parto, in the municipality of Monterchi in Tuscany.
